2026 Activations

EI0K will activate EI9DD for St Patrick’s Weekend

EI0k will activate EI9DD, the callsign of the Irish Army Apprentice School on St. Patrick’s Day. The Irish Army Apprentice School was opened in 1956 to train craftsmen for the Irish Army and Naval service. There were five trades: Electrician, Fitter/Armourer, Motor Technician, Carpenter and Radio/Radar Technician. It was within the radio section that the amateur radio club was formed. The apprentice school was closed in 1998 and the training of technicians for the Irish Defence Forced reverted to the various Corps schools. The military barracks itself was partly demolished and the Osprey Hotel is now on the site of the Officer’s Mess. Listen out for the club activities on the day. Read more about the activation here

EI0K Activates for Arthur Guinness’s 300th Birthday

To mark the 300th birthday of Arthur Guinness, the legendary Irish brewer born in 1725, the Kildare Amateur Radio Club activated the club callsign EI0K as a special event station between the 19th and 21st of September. Special QSL cards were designed and used over the weekend to commemorate the event.

The station operated on HF, VHF, SSTV, and FT8, celebrating the remarkable legacy of Arthur Guinness, whose name is synonymous with Irish heritage and brewing excellence. During the event, club members operated on various HF bands, inviting amateur radio enthusiasts from around the world to connect, exchange greetings, and join in recognizing one of Ireland’s most iconic figures.
